13439. (press photo) Demolition of Bishop and Clerks Lighthouse off Hyannisport c.1952. Clear, close, original 7” x 9” composite press photo shows excellent detail of the lighthouse at Bishop and Clerks as it is demolished. Bishop and Clerks Lighthouse once marked the remains of a large reef just south of Hyannis Harbor. In the1850s, Congress approved funds for a tower here, and the light was lit in 1858. The granite tower stood 59 feet above the water and boasted a distinctive wooden bell tower. In 1928 the light was deemed unnecessary and in 1952 was dynamited by the Coast Guard. Photo is b/w and includes date and description on back. Dated September 23, 1952. Clear, close view, great detail including before, during and after the dynamite blast. This is an extremely rare view as few were present when the 94-year old tower was demolished. (VG+). $68.
