1620. (photo) Life Saving Surfmen, Peaked Hill Bar Station, Provincetown, Cape Cod c.1890-1900. Rare close photo of four surfmen from the Peaked Hill Bar station on Cape Cod’s outer beach. Photo is on portion of album page with labeling identifying Benjamin S. Henderson, second from left. Dalton’s The Life Savers of Cape Cod notes (page 77) that Henderson was No. 2 Surfman in 1902. He was born in Wellfleet and had been a member of the station crew for seventeen years. He had “come from a sea-going family, and took naturally to the hard and perilous work that life savers are called upon to perform.” View is clear and close, but does have some wear including some creases and tears prior to being pasted onto the album page. Photo measures 4 ½” x 4 ½”. Rare image. (G+). $95.
