12285i. [photo] Edward Rowe Snow Delivering Christmas Packages to Boston Harbor Forts and Light Stations c.1943. Large 7”x9” b/w press photograph shows Mr. Snow on board a motor launch on his annual tour of Boston Harbor forts and light stations, bearing Christmas gifts for those on duty at their lonely posts. In past years Snow had dropped the gifts from planes, but wartime restrictions on civilian flying forced him to use the launch. In 1926, Captain William Wincapaw began the tradition of dropping Christmas gift packages from his plane to remote lighthouse families. In 1936, author and historian Edward Rowe Snow would continue the “Flying Santa” tradition, which continues to this day by local groups. From 1936 until this time Snow had completed each year except during World War II. Dorothy, about age 6 in this photo, was here beginning her 6th Flying Santa flight with her father. She made her first trip as a baby in her mother’s arms before she was a year old. Photo is clean and clear and quite a nice close view as Snow waves for the camera. Includes news caption on the back. Dated December 23, 1943. Quite nice, early view before daughter Dorothy was born. (VG+). $68.
