D-16. U. S. Light-House Service Medicine Chest c.1900-1938

D-16. U. S. Light-House Service Medicine Chest c.1900-1938. Chest was manufactured by the U. S. Lighthouse Service for use at remote light stations and on board lightships and tenders. Attractive, sturdy oak chest measures 14 ½” x 24” x 10 ½” high and was for storage of the lighthouse keeper’s medical supplies.  At one time there were wood dividers and a wood tray but they are not included. Chest is of the early design, the later design having a lower drawer, and was issued only to remote light stations that did not have ready access to medical assistance. Because of the types of medicines issued with the chest, a lock was provided to assure security. Chest has jointed corners and is engraved on the front “U. S. L. H. S.”. Front includes inset brass key lock [key missing], and two brass handles on ends – one side handle missing, only bracket remains. This would be a valuable piece for any museum or collection. An extremely rare USLHS medicine chest and a scarce find. (VG). $4,285.
