16118b. (cabinet photograph) Light House Establishment 2nd. Assistant Keeper John P. Brooks, Whaleback Lighthouse c.1900. This rare posed original portrait photograph shows the clean-cut rather dapper Assistant Keeper proudly posing in his 8-button double-breasted uniform coat. Clearly visible on his collars are the “2” insignia, indicating his position as 2nd Assistant Keeper. Also clearly visible are the early “U.S.L.H.E.” buttons on his coat, and just a hint of the embroidered cap insignia in his left hand. John P. Brooks was the second assistant keeper at Whaleback Light from 1899-1915. Although offered other assignments on the mainland, brooks and his fellow keepers chose the life at this remote offshore light. Included is a photocopy newspaper article (Boston Daily Globe April 23, 1911) describing the live of Keeper Brooks and his two fellow keepers, of their life there, their rescues and their narrow escapes. The image measures 4” x 5 ½” on a 5 ½” x 7 ½” original mount. Mount stamped “Newell [photographer] Portsmouth, N.H.” Photo is clear, and crisp, one of the better images we have had in some time. It is rare to find images of the Assistant Keepers in any format. Some wear and chipping to corners of mount, a few light marks. (VG+). $425.
