B-278. U. S. Coast Guard Academy Ensign hat. White cotton type cap with black mohair band and hat device with Coast Guard insignia on crossed anchors. c. 1985. Described in Coast Guard Uniform Regulations as: “White above band of lustrous black mohair braid 1 ¼” wide; visor of patent leather; bound with same, black underneath , to slope down at an angle of 45 from the horizontal; gilded chin strap, fastened at sides with two small Coast Guard buttons. The crown to be from 1 inch to 1 ¼ inches greater in diameter than the band and to be stiffened….” Hat by Bernard ‘Snap Cap’, size 7 1/8. Included is the new Ensign’s ticket for his May 22, 1985 Commencement at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Ct. Also includes Academy undergraduate hat band with fouled anchor and one silver star. Quite a nice example of a new Ensign’s hat. (VG+). $36 net.
