  1. (photo) United States Life-Saving Station, Louisville, KY. c.1910. Great photo on post card paper shows great detail of the one-of-a-kind river Life-Saving station docked at the wharf in Louisville, Kentucky in about 1910 or so. The United States Life-Saving Service was established in 1848 and soon stations were established around the country near dangerous waters. The first such lifesaving station on the Western Rivers was established at Louisville, Kentucky, in 1881 to guard the treacherous Falls of the Ohio River. In 1902, a second wooden lifeboat station replaced the first, shown here. It too was moored at the foot of Third Street. The wooden hull of the second Louisville Life-Saving Station eventually became worn out and a new station would be built in 1929. Image is quite clear, great detail, on postcard paper. 3 ½” x 5 ½”. Marked in pen “Cincinatti, Ohio” but is actually Louisville. (VG+) $36.
