Very good copy of the first edition of this important history of the invention and early development of steam boats and steam navigation, with especially good information on the Hudson and Delaware Rivers, Long Island Sound, the Great Lakes, and the Atlantic coast. Chapters cover the country by area with history of the noted vessels and steamship lines of the period. Also includes extensive information on the progress of the science at the time, history of various steamship lines. Also includes excellent chapters on tow boats, the state of lighthouses, lightships and fog signals and the work toward improvement, Life-Saving Service, Steamboat Inspection Service, and on the Steam Calliope or Organ.
