12199d. U. S. Lighthouse Service Chronograph – Stopwatch. “U.S.L.H.S.”
12199d. U. S. Lighthouse Service Chronograph – Stopwatch. A.R. & J.E. Meylan half Chronograph, Original Box & Pouch. Back beautifully marked “U.S.L.H.S.” Case of base metal, 50 mm. Dial: enamel, Arabic, spade hands, sub seconds, thirty minute register at twelve. Movement: 15 jewels, nickel finish. A chronograph is any watch that can be started and stopped at will to record an elapsed time. As I understand it there are half and full chronographs. A half chronograph is one that does everything with successive pushes of a button. These are start stop reset. A full chronograph has a second button allowing start and stop repeatedly with a separate reset pusher. This would be a half chronograph. Such timers were issued to each of the Inspectors in the Lighthouse Districts for timing the rotation of the lighthouse lenses. This watch is engraved “U.S.L.H.S.” in large letters on the back cover. The porcelain dial is marked only “Swiss”. and is in fine condition. Small register hand is broken with both pieces present but register runs well. The case evidences only light expected wear. Inside back case is marked with the serial number 874869 and Leonidas. The Swiss movement appears to work well. Includes original cloth pouch and cardboard box, both marked with Meylan name. A good opportunity for the sophisticated collector of U. S. Lighthouse Service artifacts. (VG+). $1,600.
