Canal Light Station, Lake Pontchartrain, New Orleans, La. c.1955. Close
clear view of the New Canal light station. About 1880, a substantial yacht club
was built northwest of the second lighthouse tower at this site, partially
obscuring the light. The Lighthouse Board decided to erect a new two-story
lighthouse atop the old screwpiles, thus raising the focal plane sixteen feet.
The old lighthouse was sold for scrap, and the third incarnation of the New
Canal Lighthouse, shown here in 1955, was activated on June 2, 1890. Great
view of the lovely keeper’s house and lantern room. b/w, 8” x 10”,

(research report copy) Port Pontchartrain Light
House,
Louisiana
1839- . The lighthouse known as Port Pontchartrain Light House
was an octagonal wood tower, built at a cost of $4,400. Completed in
February of 1839, it was 28 feet high and 18 feet in diameter with a
revolving chandelier. In late 1855 a brick tower on a concrete pad was
built and this tower was torn down in 1864. The light from the old tower
was originally placed in the new tower and then replaced with a fifth
order Fresnel lens in 1857. In 1929 the light was discontinued and turned
over to the New Orleans Levee Board. The lighthouse was originally about
2000 feet offshore but with various landfill projects, over the years, the
lake is not even visible from the lighthouse today. This lot of research
information was put together from government archives in 1989 and consists
of 14 unbound copy pages of research set in a time line. Also includes two
copies of photo images of light station. $3.

Elmer, EDeana Bosworth. Lighthouses of Louisiana. St.
Albans. 2008. DJ. 131p. The first book ever to be completely devoted to the
history of Louisiana’s lighthouses. Author E’Deana Elmer has always been
fascinated by lighthouses. It took two and a half years of digging using such
sources as the National Archives and the Coast Guard Archives to put together
this detailed history of these little known and in many cases long lost beacons.
“Did you know that the Chase bank building (formerly the Hibernia building) on
Canal and Carondelet was once used as a lighthouse,” the author indicated in
an interview. At the time it was built it was the tallest building in New
Orleans and ships would use the lights on the buildings roof as a guide. There
once had been 35 lighthouses in Louisiana, with only nine of them still standing
today. Only two of them are still operational - the Southwest Pass lighthouse
and the Sabine Pass East Jetty lighthouse. Most of Louisiana’s lighthouses
have been snuffed out, destroyed by storms, eaten away by erosion, or simply

S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. Scale 1/20,000. Large 21”wide x
27” high, original b/w on paper Coast Survey chart includes all of the
river from Texas Point and Louisiana Point north past Sabine Pass Light
to Sabine Pass. The bay and river has numerous shoals and buoys.
Included on the chart are ranges and bearings, tides and currents
for the area, and soundings, as well as all lighthouses and buoys
(marked in red and black), wrecks, as are towns and features. Chart is
in good used condition, overall light to moderate soiling with light
wear, moisture to one side. Otherwise unusually good for a chart that has
been in use for 110 years. Should clean and flatten nicely. Shipped

lot of disbound charts in good condition. These are fine for matting and framing
for your wall. Charts detail the entire Light-House District in three colors,
and show all lighthouses, beacons, light vessels, fog signals, lighted buoys,
Light-House Depots, and more. Charts average 8 ˝” x 10” in size and are
overall clean, may have very light stain, with only one light original
fold, light age toning. A rare chance to obtain the chart of your District for
